Why Successful People Work Less and Get More Done

There is certainly MORE with LESS, especially when it comes to productivity. It seems that clocking more hours at work does not always lead to getting more stuff done. In fact, Stanford research suggests that one’s productivity levels significantly drop after 55 hours a week. 

Successful people have one thing in common: they make sure they have time for downtime. You’ve probably seen the CEOs of popular companies on their travel escapades and wonder they still have time for leisure. Well, they know what it means to work less and do more.

Here are some facts about work and productivity that successful people swear by:


Prioritizing is the Key

In Google, they have a goal system called OKR (Objectives and Key Results) which centers on specific, actionable and memorable steps that gear towards the company’s main goals. This system allows all employees to align their individual goals to that of the organization

The key is to know which tasks need to be prioritized so that they don’t end up spending so much time and energy on tasks that are tedious and provide very little impact on the company.

How do successful people prioritize tasks? Managing workload and hitting deadlines can be challenging. But there are a few steps to make it easier, such as: 

● Create a to-do list. Highly productive people have the habit of listing down their tasks for the entire day and sorting them based on importance and urgency. High-priority tasks are those that need immediate attention and if not completed within the day or the next few hours, will have serious consequences.

● Prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency. The rule of thumb is to work on urgent and important tasks first. Next, decide on when to tackle important but not urgent and schedule them. Tasks that are urgent but unimportant can be delegated to someone else while those that are neither urgent nor important should be dropped totally from the to-do list.


Disconnect to Connect

If there’s one thing that successful people refuse to do on weekends, that’s working. Successful people understand the importance of downtime and relaxation on their productivity and performance. As the Stanford research suggests, constantly working can take a toll on your health. Taking a break does not only improve productivity. It also boosts creativity. 

You’ve probably experienced it yourself – having an “aha” moment while you are resting or having fun. Mental fatigue is a real problem. In order for them to perform at their best, successful people give time to disconnect from work and connect with nature, people, and themselves. This downtime is so important because it gives them a chance to think more deeply about their roles and goals, and how they can make things better.


Time Management is Crucial

Time is gold. Time is money. When it comes to time management, there are just so many strategies that you can apply. 

Successful and influential people like Oprah Winfrey, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour have one thing in common – they wake up early. And that’s not to start work early. They utilize the extra hours in the morning for routines or habits that will make them feel good and productive for the rest of the day, such as meditation or exercise.

In addition to starting the day right, some other time management habits that successful people have in common are:

They know and understand their goals. Those that don’t coincide with their goals are potential time-wasters.

● They know when to say “no”. There’s nothing wrong with having to decline tasks that one can no longer handle.

● They plan ahead. Highly productive gets to eliminate time-wasters by carefully planning how to carry out a task or project effectively.

● They eliminate distractions. It might take massive power to resist distractions like social media but once done, it’s easier to focus on important tasks.

● They take care of themselves. While it seems that productivity entails more work and less downtime, balancing work and life is essential to being more productive. After all, a happy employee is a productive employee, according to a study.


The Delegation of Tasks Is All Part of Work

Successful people don’t do it alone. They trust their people and therefore, willingly delegate tasks to get stuff done as quickly as possible. To ensure a good outcome each time, learning to delegate effectively is crucial.

Delegating tasks is a skill which can be learned and improved over time. Here are some delegation strategies that can help individuals become more successful:

● Let go. A common problem among executives and managers is that they find it hard to delegate certain tasks, thinking that they may not get the results they want. It’s normal and this feeling can be addressed by delegating small tasks at first until they become more comfortable doing it.

● Set goals. An important initial step is to specify the desired outcome, identify work limits, and sufficient support. Holding people accountable for their work is a must too.

Delegate based on skill and experience. Successful people delegate tasks based on skill and experience. This makes them feel confident knowing that have the right people for the job.

It’s All About Managing Finances

You don’t need to “work like a dog” to reach your income goals. Successful people have similar money habits that make them efficient with their finances. And because of that, they don’t worry too much about getting short in funds. They look for ways to increase their income, create a budget and follow it, and don’t spend money on things that are less important.

Multitasking might seem like the ‘key’ to getting more work done. Unfortunately, it isn’t. To work efficiently, one must be able to focus on one task at a time. In fact, researchers from the University of Michigan found that trying to do multiple things at once only limit a person.

 There are some strategies that work well in avoiding multitasking:

● Eliminate distractions. Turning off phone notifications for emails, social media messages, and pop-ups is a great starting point in focusing on work.

● Be mindful. Successful people always strive to be in the present moment. When their mind is focused on the task, they are able to do it easily and effectively.

● Stay organized. It’s hard to focus when there are clutter and chaos around.


Physical and Mental Wellness Matter Most

Successful people prioritize their health among others because it’s the only way to get things done in less time. Health is wealth, so they say. When you are healthy, you have the physical and mental strength to take on various tasks and be efficient at them. 

Healthy habits include exercising regularly (which is known to boost creativity and problem-solving skills), eating right, sleeping well, and allocating time for relaxation.

Isn’t great to be able to get things done in less time? Isn’t it great to have more time for yourself and your family? Isn’t it great to achieve your goals without devoting all your life to work? Getting more done doesn’t always mean working 9 or 10 hours a day. Success comes easily if you adopt the right habits. Less is definitely more. Hopefully, these tips will help you get through the daily stresses of working and achieve your goals in the most efficient way.
